WILLOUGHBY, Ohio -- A person is dead after a dump truck crashed into a Willoughby home on Saturday morning.

The truck struck a utility pole, taking down power line and hitting a natural gas line, before hitting the house on Vine Street, between Skiff and Church streets, according to a Willoughby news release. Police received a call around 10:52 a.m. When emergency units arrived less than five minutes later, the dump truck was engulfed in flames against the house.

Police officers and bystanders removed the unidentified male driver, whom was transported to Hillcrest Hospital. Residents of the home evacuated safely. But the Willoughby Fire Department had a difficult time extinguishing the fire because of the downed powerline, gas leak and ruptured fuel tank on the truck. The unidentified passenger died.. One woman said she was the mother of the passenger who died.

The East Tech Rescue Team was able to stabilize the front of the home following the accident. Vine Street was reopened Saturday afternoon. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
