City, ADSB partnership gives bus passes to students as a life skills exercise, gives them independence

Riding Sault Ste. Marie Transit Services buses has improved the lives of a group of Algoma District School Board students.

“It’s had such a positive impact on our students, parents and program,” said ADSB teacher Scott MacDonald, addressing the board at its regular monthly meeting held on Tuesday evening. He said that a number of students have not accessed Transit Services in the past due to fear of riding a bus, difficulty reading a schedule, uncertainty about bus routes and anxiety.Learning to use an app - entitled Where's My Bus? - has given students the ability to track their bus in real time and figure out arrival times.

“We’ve been to Station Mall, Cambrian Mall, Sault College, Greco Pool, the Bushplane Museum, the John Rhodes Centre, the Northern Community Centre and the bus bay. My favourite place was the John Rhodes Centre because we got to go swimming every Wednesday,” said student Colin Burgan.“This pilot has been a life changer for me this year,” said student Melissa Cadreau.
