“Everyone sort of was warned this omicron variant would be more contagious, and I think all of us are living that now. So we’ll be back on Jan. 3 and we will, again, have a mask mandate in place,' Parma City Schools Superintendent Charles Smialek said.
“We were concerned going into the break,” Smialek said. “Numbers had increased between Thanksgiving and when we left at the end of December. I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone numbers have continued to increase.
“We didn’t really pinpoint any mass outbreaks that originated in school but at the same time, we did have clusters of athletes who got sick. So you always think that may have come from the fact that they’re obviously in close proximity in practice.” Yet another factor in Smialek’s mask-wearing decision was a plea earlier this week from members of the Ohio Hospital Association and Ohio Children’s Hospital Association encouraging mask-wearing in schools.
