Parks Canada is asking Canadians how the historic site of the Abbot Pass Hut should be remembered.
The Abbot Pass Hut was built in 1922 by Swiss guides as mountain tourism blossomed in the region, sitting high in the Rockies overlooking Lake Louise and Lake O’Hara. However, threats to its foundation due to eroding rock underneath the structure forced its closure in 2018, and its eventual demolition just before its 100th anniversary last spring, despite multiple attempts to save the structure.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
Now, Parks Canada is turning to the public for ideas as to how to memorialize the alpine landmark. In a survey open until May 22, Canadians are asked to share their views on the hut and make suggestions as to how the historic site should be remembered. “Parks Canada is interested in the whole heritage place,” said the federal agency. “When we ask Canadians why this place mattered, we are asking about Abbot Pass Hut but also about the pass, the approaches to and from it, and the activities that took place there over time. You can contribute even if you never visited Abbot Pass or Abbot Pass Hut.”
