The City of Park Ridge is asking school districts and local private schools to pay up to $83,770 more annually to place crossing guards at 23 intersections on school days.

Denny Stone helps students cross the street near Longfellow Elementary School in Buffalo Grove in August 2015. The city of Park Ridge has decided to outsource crossing guards and is asking the school districts and private schools to pay more for them.

“I don’t think the city wants to pay more,” Board Member Nicole Woitowich, who has resigned in the days since, offered. “I don’t think they’re trying to swindle the district.” Under the city’s proposal, District 207 would continue to pay $11,018 for another two years’ worth of crossing guard services and District 64 would pay $99,890, because it requires many more crossing guards, each year for the next two years.

Park Ridge decided to outsource crossing guard costs to Andy Frain in June 2022, according to the letter. According to the letter, Andy Frain provides crossing guard services to more than 30 municipalities and school districts. He said that since Park Ridge and schools last considered the crossing guard program in 2015, “costs to recruit, train and assure corner coverage [have] also increased dramatically.”Archdiocese of Chicago spokesperson Katie O’Dea said neither Mary, Seat of Wisdom nor St. Paul of the Cross School had a comment on the potential new arrangement. St. Andrews Principal Laura Boggs also said the school had no comment on the proceedings.
