Editorial | Paris Olympics gave us hope after all
South Africans like it when their national sports teams deliver on the big stage, and this excitement played out during Team SA’s campaign at the Olympic Games, which end in Paris , France, tonight.
This is an improvement from the three South Africa hauled at the previous Olympics, the Covid-delayed edition in Tokyo, Japan, three years ago.Even better, the collection of gold, two silver and two bronze medals in France equalled the total that the team brought from the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. When swimmer Tatjana Smith pulled off gold and silver medals from the pool in the opening week of the Paris Games, her exploits had a literal ripple effect across Mzansi, inspiring her team-mates.Admittedly, victories were few and apart over the past week – that created a sense of pessimism.
