The African nation had a sluggish start, but an impressive defensive performance saw them bounce backRoyal Ivey's team survived a Jose Alvarado masterclass to beat Puerto Rico 90-79 in their opening Group C match.
In the first quarter, South Sudan were down eight points but kept it close in the second period . They held Puerto Rico to 15 points in the third quarter .In the final period, they defended extremely well to win 19-10. Carlik Jones , Nuni Omot , Wenyen Gabriel , and Marial Shayok were the leading scorers for the African team.
Alvarado led Puerto Rico in scoring with 26 points in 32 minutes. However, an ankle injury likely contributed to his struggles in the second half.
