Pandemic helped remind Blue Rodeo of the joy of being in a band yyc
Blue Rodeo has been together longer than 25 years, of course. The band formed in 1985 in Toronto, building on the songwriting partnership between Cuddy and his high school friend Greg Keelor that began in the late 1970s. But Cuddy reckons the relatively comfortable tour-bus phase of the band’s career has now been going for a quarter of a century, during which time they strengthened their place as an institution in Canadian music.
Many a Mile was the first studio album for Blue Rodeo since 2016’s 1000 Arms. When it was released, the band’s record company sent out a fresh bio that alarmingly suggested the future had been uncertain for Blue Rodeo leading up to the pandemic. Keeler released a solo record in 2020 called Share the Love. Cuddy was busy making his solo record. Blue Rodeo was still playing the odd show, but there were no plans to record again.
Eventually, Cuddy caught up and Many a Mile is made up of songs split evenly between the two writers. Starting with Keelor’s wistful and moody mid-tempo rocker, When You Were Wild, the album alternates between his atmospheric numbers such as Deep Dark Well and Symmetry of Starlight and Cuddy’s roots-pop gems such as I Owe it To Myself and the galloping I Think About You and his trademark melodic ballads such as All in Your Hands.
