Palo Alto is moving forward with the historic preservation of about 130 homes to keep them from being developed under SB9.

Palo Alto is moving forward to speed up registration of over 100 historic homes identified in a 2000 report despite fears the city would use preservation as a way to skirt Senate Bill 9 altogether.

Already communities like Woodside and Portola Valley — and Pasadena in the south — have attempted to keep homeowners from building more housing units on their single-family lots through creative means. Woodside cited a mountain lion habitat as to why the town should be exempt from SB 9 and Portola Valley warns that fires could rage in the hillside community if more homes are built.

But council members attempted to quell those fears Monday, moving forward to register properties that were deemed eligible for historic preservation in a study made of landmark homes in the city two decades ago. Of those about 160 homes that were identified back then, about 130 are still eligible for preservation — others had either been demolished or have been significantly altered.

Mayor Pat Burt noted that the 130 properties the council could put forward for historic preservation are less than 1% of the total number of single-family homes in the city. He said historic preservation was “deliberately” included in the law to preserve historic homes: “It’s not a bug of this law, it’s a feature of the law,” he said.
