Since the onset of the pandemic, introspection has been central to the creative process of Palmer Harding designers Matthew Harding and Levi Palmer. For fall, the duo wanted to shed traditional design conventions, and, instead, find new ways of expressing growth and transformation. “We focused on the analogy of a seed being planted, and how it might blossom in its own unique way,” said Palmer in a preview.
The collection explored silhouettes reflective of the growth process of a seed. To begin with, there were floor-grazing knits, shirts, dresses, and pants. Then, to represent the seedling taking on more form, separates and outerwear had lace-up corset accents on the sleeves and backs that gave the garments a reveal-and-conceal dynamic. “The corseting element is representative of the idea of restriction, but, once unravelled, a growth can organically flourish through,” said Harding.
As the metaphorical seed blossomed into its final shape, there were ruffle eco-leather skirts, poplin shirts with flamenco sleeves, and structured midi dresses with A-line skirts that mimicked a flower in its full splendor. A particularly exceptional detail included the couture-level of crinoline finishes to the edges of the “blossomed” pieces, giving them the flounce and volume of a floral silhouette.
In recent seasons, Palmer Harding has undergone its own metamorphosis. It’s encouraging to see the designers experiment with fresh silhouettes and textures while maintaining their distinctive signatures.
