Pakistan's high court sentenced the cricketer-turned-prime minister to three years in jail for corruption charges.
A Pakistan High Court has suspended former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s prison sentence and corruption charges, although it is unclear whether this would lead to his release from jail.
The cricketer-turned politican was imprisoned for three years on corruption charges in August after being ousted from power in parliament last year. Khan, who is currently incarcerated in the northwestern city of Attock, is currently facing up to 100 charges of corruption- accusations he strenously denies.
As a result of the conviction, and with a national election expected in coming months, Pakistan’s Election Commission also barred Khan from contesting elections for five years. On Tuesday morning, Khan’s lawyer Naeem Panjutha announced on Twitter that ‘Our application has been accepted, and the sentence has been suspended.’
The uncertainty over whether Khan would be automatically released as a result of the High Court’s decision is due to other court orders allowing for his arrest in other cases.
