Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts insists he doesn't need 10 days, remains day-to-day instead of heading to injured list with his balky left wrist
balky left wrist forced him from Saturday’s game, and the Padres’ new $280 million shortstop admitted it was still sore after Sunday’s loss to the Cubs. The Padres opted against immediately placing Bogaerts on the injured list, a discussion in which Bogaerts’ voice carries significant weight as the team brass huddles with its training staff.“With the right stuff, I don’t need 10 days,” Bogaerts said.
Bogaerts declined to get into specifics, other than to say he’s “not waiting until” he’s able to get another cortisone injection. He’s sat, for instance, a game each of the last two weekends because of the wrist discomfort, and the Padres expect to monitor it closely as they manage a bench that was two deep on Sunday with Bogaerts and“You wouldn’t want to go on the IL, but we’ll see what the prudent thing is to do,” Padres managerAs for Bogaerts’ two cents, however much it’s weighted in this conversation, it’s clear the direction he’s leaning.
Toward that end, Lugo had a thumbs up after testing his left calf during running drills on Saturday. He threw a 50-pitch, up-and-down bullpen on Friday and will throw another session on Monday, his fifth since landing on the injured list.
