Padres go with hot bat at DH; Luis Campusano likely to get more starts, but it isn't known when; Matt Williams returns to bench after cancer surgery
Manager Bob Melvin has been adamant the Padres will be careful to not wear down their designated hitters, both of advanced age in baseball years, and will try to make sure they match up both as favorably as possible with certain pitchers.
It was the first time Cruz, who hits from the right side, started against a right-handed starter and the first time the left-handed-hitting Matt Carpenter was not at DH or first base in a game started by an opposing righty.“He’s been swinging the pretty well,” Melvin said of Cruz, who also had the benefit of being 2-for-3 with a home run against Rea in his career. “So that gives me an opportunity to have Carp off the bench, too.
“I feel like I’m pretty locked in,” Cruz said. “So I really feel comfortable hitting against righties also. That’s what I’ve done in my career.” The idea when the Padres signed Cruz and the 37-year-old Carpenter was that they would platoon. But the idea is also to follow the hot hitter as much as possible.
