Durban’s home-town paddling superstar Hank McGregor will be hoping to collect another SA title at the SA Surfski Champs and put himself on track for a World Championship title at the same venue in 2025.The largest surfski competition in the nation, the Biogen Pete Marlin Surfski Race, is scheduled to take place in East London on 2-3 November, marking the return of the ocean paddling community’s focal event.
Traditionally there is the singles race on the Saturday and doubles event on Sunday, but organisers have the option to swop races in the interest of safety or more favourable downwind conditions. Race Director, Charl van Wyk, is confident the 2024 event will continue to build on the success of previous years.“Our aim every year is to make the Biogen Pete Marlin Surfski Race the best downwind paddling event in the country,” said Van Wyk this week. “After the near perfect conditions we have enjoyed in recent years, we once again expect the country’s top elite men and women to plan the trip to the Border region for the Pete Marlin weekend.
“The paddling is the excuse for their trip to the Eastern Cape, but this event is far more than “just” a surfski race, and the atmosphere and vibe throughout the weekend is what keeps drawing more and more paddlers back each year.”While the event will not be the national championships for 2024, the cream of South African ocean paddling community is expected to take part as they fight for the lucrative inaugural Euro Steel TRPL Crown titles.
