Revenue from the tax mostly goes to repair the state’s roads and bridges, but one lawmaker said Pennsylvania has the opportunity to fund those projects with the state’s budget surplus.
The Pennsylvania Senate Democratic Caucus is calling on the Republican majority in their chamber to run a gas tax holiday bill. Senate Democratic Appropriations Committee Chairman Vincent Hughes said a three-month gas tax holiday would carry a $950 million price tag but that could be offset with the state's historic budget surplus.
Revenue from the tax mostly goes to repair the state’s roads and bridges, but Costa said that the state has the opportunity to fund those projects with the state’s budget surplus while reducing the cost of gas for motorists with the tax suspension. Added Sen. Sharif Street, D-Philadelphia: “It’s time to free the funds to use them to help ordinary Pennsylvanians. We need Republicans to join us, put aside hard partisan feelings and actually do something for the people of Pennsylvania.”
