The P.E.I. Women's Institute is gathering period products for its Taking Care of Women’s Business. Period. 28-day campaign. File - FileCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The P.E.I. Women's Institute is launching its annual campaign to ensure period products are available at food banks across the Island.
The 28-day campaign aims to collect products or monetary donations to address the need for menstruation products. The drive started when founding organizer Tracy Comeau read about a young homeless woman who felt as if she lost her dignity because she could not afford pads or tampons during her menstrual period.Since the campaign's inception, it has raised more than $40,000 worth of products or donations.
Each year, the entire inventory collected is given to food banks across the province within weeks of the collection.Starting Feb. 1, residents can drop off period products to Murphy’s Pharmacy locations across P.E.I., which will match donations with its house brand, as well as Main Street Pharmasave in Souris and the Women's Institute office at 40 Enman Cres., in Charlottetown. It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
