“I'm scared, I'm worried and I don't think it's enough. I don't think it's near enough.”
The Public Schools Branch says the recently released back-to-school guidelines will give students and teachers the closest thing to a normal school year since COVID-19 hit P.E.I. - Unsplash PhotoCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The province’s public schools authority says the recently released back-to-school guidelines will give students and teachers the closest thing to a normal school year since COVID-19 hit P.E.I.
On Aug. 25, Dr. Heather Morrison, the province’s Chief Public Health Officer, released the back-to-school plan for the 2022-23 year, which outlined voluntary use of masks for staff and students and encouraged vaccines, boosters, regular handwashing and staying home when sick.
“There are no protocols such as masking in place publicly right now, so I think the expectation was to go back to pretty near normal times,” he said. “However, we do realize there is still a virus,” he said, noting that the guidelines have other measures that will go into place if cases begin to rise after school starts.
Matthew Vincent, another parent who spoke with SaltWire Network, said he had hoped to see masking and physical distancing be reintroduced to schools as COVID-19 case numbers have remained high over the summer. Vincent said the Island is still seeing high COVID-19 case counts and an increasing number of deaths, so the relaxed rules don’t make sense for kids returning to school.
As for MacDonald, she said she knows her daughter will be taking all precautions she can when she heads back to school, including masking up, and hopes other parents will ask their kids to as well.
