P.E.I. Premier Dennis King is calling on Ottawa to reduce tolls on the Confederation Bridge and ferry service to the mainland. | SaltWire

P.E.I. Premier Dennis King said he wants to see a committee struck that would include provincial and federal representatives working toward reducing tolls on Confederation Bridge and the P.E.I.-Nova Scotia ferry to $20. - ContributedCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — P.E.I. Premier Dennis King is calling on Ottawa to reduce tolls on the Confederation Bridge and ferry service to the mainland.

King said he and the four MPs from P.E.I. have also been meeting regularly on this issue. The premier said he would like to see a committee of provincial and federal officials created to look at how it could be done. King points to Champlain Bridge in Montreal for comparison. The federal government subsidizes that bridge to the tune of almost $200 million annually. That subsidy makes the 3.4-kilometre crossing free.King said if P.E.I. received the same $200-million subsidy, fares could drop to $20 per crossing.

“Twenty-dollars seems to be somewhere the federal government could get to if you look at the premise that a Canadian is a Canadian and the fact that our link to the mainland is ensconced in the Constitution.’’
