A Prince Edward Islander could not be happier to be coming home to play for the Charlottetown Islanders. 'It’s surreal and it’s hard to put into words,' said left-winger Simon Hughes.
Hughes recalls attending Islanders’ games at Eastlink Centre as a kid. Growing up, his next-door neighbour was former Islander star Daniel Sprong.
“I feel I haven’t been able to fully blossom in the Q yet,” said Hughes. “I know it’s going to happen; I am confident in myself and the people around me are confident, too. “Simon checks all three boxes, and there’s the huge bonus he’s a local ,” said Hulton. “Any time you can add a quality, local guy back in your lineup, you have to consider it.Charlottetown Islanders logo - Contributed
Hughes, who is looking to bring physicality and energy to the Islanders, said he’s working hard on transforming his game to a second-, third-line type of player who forechecks hard, plays a power forward type of game and is a presence in front of the net. “You can’t always be the best team in the league, and you need years to regroup and get better,” said Hughes. “It gives younger guys and guys like me a chance to fully get into their game and blossom into good hockey players.”
Michel, a third-round selection of the Phoenix in 2020 listed as six feet tall and 187 pounds, had five assists in 58 regular-season games last year and a goal and an assist in 17 contests during the 2022-23 campaign.
