The short-term funding measure came at a time when the long-term care sector was grappling with aGreen health critic Michele Beaton said the funding highlighted disparities between public and private long-term care facilities. She also said the funding set up a perverse incentive for private facilities.
Thirty-three residents of long-term care and community care have died due to outbreaks since the beginning of the year. A services agreement between the province and private operators expired in March 2020 and has yet to be renegotiated. At least one facility, Andrews Senior Care, announced in November 2020 it would increase room rates paid by residents due to increased staffing and other costs.
The 2022 funding allowed for hiring additional staff but MacDougall conceded it was not geared to improving wages for long-term care staff.
