Samuel David Matthews, 30, was sentenced on Jan. 10 in provincial court in Charlottetown to house arrest for his most recent shoplifting offences. - Terrence McEachernA P.E.I. man with a lengthy criminal record for thefts has avoided jail for his most recent shoplifting offences.
Two days later, on April 8, Matthews was at Canadian Tire in Summerside, where he bought bolt cutters and left the store. He then re-entered the store with the bolt cutters and tried to cut open a steel cage to steal an item. Instead, he stole a backpack priced at $19.99 and left the store, said MacDonald.
MacDonald recommended a step-up sentence compared to Matthews' previous jail terms comprised of 45 days each for the two Canadian Tire thefts and 60 days for the safe theft from Staples totalling 150 days, or five months, in custody. Matthews then spoke in court and apologized for the thefts. He also said that a weekend or conditional sentence would allow him to continue on the path he's on to get better for his family.
