Overcrowding, social distancing and challenges of rotational rostering ring in new school year
For some schools in Tembisa, heeding Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga’s call for social distancing in classrooms was no challenge, but in others the minister took heat for the rotational roster system.
Teachers at Mashemong Primary School welcomed both new and returning pupils as schools in inland provinces opened on Wednesday. Photo: Palesa Dlamini With Motshekga having announced during a briefing on Tuesday that, for the time being, the rotational system would remain in place, parent Thulisile Ntombela said: The mother of a Grade 4 pupil said with the rotational system “the children are struggling to complete their work. Some children are slow learners and it’s not easy for them.”
“As a parent, there is only so much I can do. Yes, I can help with homework as much as I can, but we grew up in a different time. I do not understand most of what is being taught now. Things have changed and teachers understand these things better.”
