South Africans will head to the polls on 4 November.
With local govt elections just over a year away, ActionSA & PA score big with by-election wins The Electoral Commission of South Africa has announced a voter registration weekend on 20 and 21 June, allowing eligible voters to register, update their registration details or confirm their voting station.
IEC Western Cape Provincial Electoral Officer Michael Hendrickse said the number of registered political parties could still change before election day.
"At this stage, overall, in terms of registered parties, we have 526; however, not all of them will be participating in the election because the next step is to submit candidates. "So some parties will elect to contest in some municipalities, and others will not be contesting. So we'll only know the final numbers once the nomination process is concluded.
”The South African Local Government Association said more needs to be done to understand why some citizens, particularly the youth, are not voting. The IEC recently revealed that more than 70% of eligible South Africans between the ages of 18 and 19 have not registered to vote. SALGA spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said the issue does not appear to be a lack of awareness about elections or their importance.
“So, what becomes important is that we need to obviously look into what are some of those reasons that are causing citizens to believe that they still believe in the act of voting, but maybe not in the people or the party that they are voting for. ”“The message that young people are sending is that they're not necessarily rejecting democracy, but they are rejecting empty promises, or they are rejecting leaders that don't keep to the commitment that propelled them to office.
And therefore, young people are active, they are participating, but we see that the motivation for them to participate is first waning out. ”
