In West Dunbartonshire, in 2022/23, there were 1202 homeless applications, one less than the previous year but 180 more than in 2019/20.
More than 500 children across West Dunbartonshire are facing homelessness, shocking new figures have revealed.
The number of people living in temporary accommodation has also skyrocketed, and the number of children in temporary accommodation increased by 39 per cent in a year in West Dunbartonshire and by 33 per cent in Argyll and Bute – far higher than the Scottish average of nine per cent. The Scottish Government say that tackling homelessness is a key priority. Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie added: “This shocking situation is a damning indictment of two failed governments – the SNP and the Tories – who have presided over this crisis due to their chronic inaction.
Councillor Gurpreet Singh Johal, the council’s housing convener, said: “Homelessness is a huge issue in West Dunbartonshire and it is proving to be a real challenge to drive down the numbers. “The council has invested an extra £50million to improve the quality of our housing, to address dampness issues, to purchase additional homes through the buy-back scheme which help us to accommodate larger families and households with a disabled family member. In addition, we have plans to build over 700 additional council houses over the next five years and other social housing providers are building new homes across the council area.
