Iranian-Canadians for Justice and Human Rights organized the march in solidarity with the global growing uprising against the Islamic republic.
Iranian and Canadian flags fluttered over the masses of protesters in Richmond Hill Saturday afternoon as thousands chanted “Mahsa Amini,” the name of a young Iranian woman who died following her arrest by the country’s morality police. Signs were held high showing her face accompanied by impassioned calls to “say her name.”
Sara Shariati was one of the protesters shouting vehemently for attendees to say Amini’s name. Born and raised in Iran, she moved to Canada with her immediate family when she was in high school, seven years ago. “We keep looking to see if we know any of the people and checking on the news to see who is dead,” Shariati said. “We’ve been out for many years now, but it still hurts. It’s a dagger in our hearts. Those are our loved ones, friends and families.”
“For too long we have allowed the tyrants in Iran to terrorize the people, steal their rights, engage in extrajudicial arrests and disappearances,” he said. “The time has come for Canadians and for people of all the world who stand for freedom against tyranny to rally, free Iran and pursue a new democratic government.”
Ali Ehsassi, MP for Willowdale, also mentioned flight PS752 noting the last time the Iranian community gathered in a similar fashion was to protest the Iranian government for the takedown of the aircraft.
