Over 400 Learners Cheat in 2024 National Senior Certificate Exams

Umalusi, the education quality watchdog, revealed that over 400 learners cheated in the National Senior Certificate exams for 2024. Despite a decrease in the number of cheating incidents compared to 2023, Umalusi remains concerned. KwaZulu-Natal had the highest number of learners who cheated, with 195 cases, followed by Mpumalanga with 74 cases. Umalusi CEO, Dr Mafu Rakometsi, expressed concern about the continued prominence of KZN and Mpumalanga in these statistics.

The organization also highlighted other issues requiring attention from relevant assessment bodies, including high absenteeism rates and subjects with unusually high failure rates. Umalusi stated that these observations raise questions about the level of support learners receive in their teaching, learning, and examination preparation.Earlier this year, the Department of Basic Education launched an investigation after a company allegedly offered R100 for exam results to matriculants. Department spokesperson, Elijah Motalane, emphasized that if the leak originated within the Department, consequence management would be implemented
