More than 4,100 business owners have registered their spaza shops in Tshwane, South Africa, ahead of the deadline to improve regulatory oversight and food safety standards in the informal food sector. This follows hundreds of cases of food contamination and the deaths of at least 23 children since September. While the city welcomes the registrations, officials acknowledge that more needs to be done to encourage compliance, especially in townships where concerns about government enforcement and costs exist. Long-term regulatory reforms are also being implemented to formalize and strengthen the informal economy.
