In response to a parliamentary Q&A by the opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, the minister of public service and administration, Thulas Nxesi, revealed just how much it is setting back the government to keep paying the salaries of suspended members.

The Department of Public Service and Administration says that there are currently 305 government officials sitting at home on suspension with full pay, costing taxpayers R131 million.

Currently, there are 79 precautionary suspension cases received in national departments, including, but not limited to, those in the National Correctional Services, the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Public Service and Administration itself, and the Department of the Presidency. The number of public servants who have been dismissed from employment has increased, especially over the last year.
