Police have brought 153 alleged illegal miners to the surface during a four-day operation at the abandoned South Mine in Sabie, Mpumalanga.
The multi-agency operation also recovered three bodies, showing theThe operation, led by the South African Police Service , involved various stakeholders, including the Department of Home Affairs, Department of Health, the South African National Defence Force, private security companies, and a mining company.
Authorities reported no injuries during the operation. Among those rescued were South Africans, Basotho, Zimbabweans, and Mozambicans, reflecting the cross-border nature of illegal mining activities.“The investigation into the illegal mining activities has already begun to ensure justice is served. We plead with everyone to allow this team a space to conduct their investigation without being distracted and the public will be notified in due course.
