“I was doing standing practice,” Delle Donne recalled. “And I still do it today. It helps me find my base, it helps me to have kind of a 10-minute meditation. I was just standing and thinking I’m going to get through this 10 minutes without giving up. I’m going to find a way to get it from my base, and to make this a 10 minutes that, somehow, I’ll get through. And feeling like, at times, it was impossible, and I was going to have to quit.
“First, it’s just a love of what we’re doing, a passion to continue to reach new heights and see how far we can go,” Delle Donne says. “Another part of it is like, that drive of, I’m not going to allow this to stop me. I’m not ready yet. It’s got to be on my own terms. And, I think throughout our careers, we’ve been through so much — tough losses, whatever it may be. But all of those things prepare you for the tougher moments — like, for me, my back situation.
Knowing his role on his teams allowed Green to continue to play through numerous injuries during his career, including a broken wrist, broken arm and sprained shoulder. He was willing to go out on that island every week, sometimes at less than 100 percent, and still compete against the league’s elite receivers, from Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin to Willie Gault and Roy Green.
“The shot had worn off,” Green said.”I was on Anthony Carter. And that game got down to that last play, timeout, this is going to the Super Bowl or not. I don’t even need to come to the huddle. I’m thinking, they know I’ve got an issue. Anthony is here. They’ve got to be coming my way. I’m ready. I’m finna to give everything I’ve got. My rib is hurting, ’cause the medicine’s worn off. It doesn’t matter. This is the Super Bowl.
