'Our baby died of strep B, a £15 test could have saved him' 🔴 Hannah and Tim lost their son Zac just hours after his birth. Now they are calling for national screening of pregnant women for GBS – which kills about one newborn child a week

Hannah and Tim Taylor-Smith lost their son Zac just hours after his birth. Now they are calling for national screening of pregnant women for GBS – which kills about one newborn child a week

Their lives have been torn apart by an infection called GBS – the group B Streptococcus bacterium, also known as Strep B – which kills on average one baby a week in the UK, according to charityThis common bacteria is found in the vagina, rectum and bowel in 20 to 40 per cent of women, and is harmless to the carrier but can be dangerous if passed from mother to baby around the time of labour.

Tim, 37, said they were concerned about his breathing straight away. “He was definitely struggling from the get-go. The midwife buzzed for a paediatrician. We were concerned but not overly because no one was rushing in in a panic.” Tim said: “There were around 30 people all around our baby trying to save him but his blood pressure continued to drop and they told us nothing was working. They said he was showing signs of extensive brain damage and his outcome was bleak.

The hospital said that this month it had joined the national research trial involving screening women who are more than 35 weeks into their pregnancy.
