Transport Minister Omar Alghabra says law would demand more transparency and accountability from airports and carriers.
New legislation being rolled out by Ottawa will enable the government to set service standards in Canada’s airports, and require more transparency from airport operators and carriers about their internal workings.
Federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra introduced the Air Transportation Accountability Act in Parliament Tuesday along with a slate of other measures meant to improve operations in airports across the country. “As we head into another busy travel season, we have seen how a disruption at one end of the system can have effects across the entire network,” Alghabra said in a press release from Transport Canada. “Together, the measures in this proposed legislation will help create a more accountable, transparent and accessible national transportation system that meets the needs of Canadians.”
Flight cancellations, delays and lost baggage are among the many challenges a growing number of passengers faced as travel increased post-pandemic — particularly last summer.
