The federal government has promised to bring at least 40,000 Afghans to Canada by the end of this year
The federal government says that with the arrival of a chartered flight from Pakistan, 30,000 Afghan refugees have arrived in Canada, marking a milestone in its program bringing Afghans to Canada following the Taliban takeover. However, many Afghans waiting to come to Canada remain left behind.
“This is an ambitious achievement as we work towards our goal of resettling at least 40,000 Afghans by the end of 2023,” he said. A former interpreter who The Globe met in a hotel in Islamabad said he has now waited more than 20 months to come to Canada. The Globe is not naming him because he fears for the safety of his relatives in Afghanistan.
The interpreter and his family have completed the medical and biometric tests necessary before leaving for Canada. He said Wednesday’s milestone is a “testament to the incredible work of governments, stakeholders and NGOS, and underscores our belief that welcoming refugees is an integral part of who we are.”
