Ottawa police chief Eric Stubbs has added his voice to the condemnation of the death of Tyre Nichols, 29, who died Jan. 10, three days after a confrontation with Memphis police officers in a violent traffic stop.

U.S. President Joe Biden and dozens of police departments and civic leaders have urged for calm and Nichols family urged any demonstrators to protest peacefully.Article content “Mr. Nichols’ death, like so many before him, is tragic,” Stubbs said. “This tragedy destabilizes communities and undermines trust in police.”

“Police need to be held to the highest standards of conduct. We are committed to ensuring everyone in our community is safe and feels safe.
