Orlando Pirates have been advised to think twice if they had different plans about Malawian striker Gabadinho Mhango.
Mhango has had a difficult 2021/22 season and was affected by off- field issues which resulted in him making only four appearances so far and had his future with the Soweto giants in doubt at some point. However, the player’s agent Mike Makaab confirmed that Pirates exercised the two-year option on Mhango’s deal to keep him until at least 2024 unless the club decides otherwise.
As Mhango will be hoping to impress co-coaches Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids to force his way into the starting line-ups at the Buccaneers when the season resumes in February, the 29-year-old has been handed an opportunity to get some minutes on the field and to improve his form with the Malawian national team.
Mhango has been named in Malawi’s final squad for the Africa Cup of Nations which is scheduled take place in Cameroon from 9 January to 6 February 2022. “When Mhango signed for Pirates, I saw him as someone who was going to assist the club to move forward but the only concern that I had about the boy and not necessarily a problem was his attitude towards to the game. I’m not talking about the attitude towards coaches or the team but to himself and his family and the football fraternity. There is a positive attitude and a negative attitude but I do suspect that the management must have called him to warn him that he is not bigger than the club.
