They say, illegal miners, the majority of whom are foreign nationals have terrorised the community.
Residents of Kanana township near Orkney in the North West say they are living in fear. They say illegal miners, the majority of whom are foreign nationals, have terrorised the community.
This comes after over 600 illegal mineworkers have resurfaced in the past few days at the Margaret shaft in Stilfontein following the intensified Vala Umgodi program led by the South African Police Service and South African National Defense Force . Police and SANDF blocked routes used to deliver food and necessities to these illegal miners. One resident who spoke on the basis of anonymity says they have made attempts to engage law enforcement agencies to resolve the matter to no avail.
“There is fear amongst members of the community because these issues have been taking place for more than seven to 10 years and there were several attempts made by active and committed members of the community in terms of fighting these notorious gangs that seeks to ravage our own communities.
