Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel, is "super excited" for the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid remake. While Benson began her career on the stage, she is best known for voicing Ariel in Disney's 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid, which became one of the most beloved Disney stories. Benson also reprised the role in the princess' other animated appearances, including Ariel's cameo in 2018's Ralph Breaks the Internet.

The new Little Mermaid stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina as the voices of Sebastian, Flounder, and Scuttle, respectively.

How The Live-Action Little Mermaid Will Differ From Animated Original Beyond changing the cast and director, the live-action Little Mermaid will have a few key differences from the original. First, Miranda and Menken have teamed up to write four completely new songs for the film, with Miranda teasing that Diggs' Sebastian may rap. The remake will also feature several new characters.
So far, these differences all seem like positive additions to the Little Mermaid remake. With previous live-action adaptations like 2019's The Lion King, one of the main criticisms aimed at Disney was that the new films didn't need to be made because they were just sub-par copies of the original, but next year's Little Mermaid appears to be avoiding this problem. Instead, it's shaping up to be an exciting and "beautiful" film.
