Wonder Woman's new era comes with a despicable new rival: Sargent Steel, a rather obscure character with nevertheless a long history.

Warning: contains spoilers for Wonder Woman #1!Wonder Woman is entering a bold new era and with it comes a despicable new rival: Sargent Steel. Once a staple of DC’s espionage comics, including The Suicide Squad, Steel has only made sporadic appearances in the past decade. Now, writer Tom King and artist Daniel Sampere have breathed new life into this classic character, who has quite a history at DC. Ironically enough, Sargent Steel was originally not a DC character.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT When readers encounter Sargent Steel in Wonder Woman #1, he is helping the United States government enforce the Amazon Extradition Treaty which stipulates that all Amazons living in the United States must leave. Steel is enforcing the act with lethal force, killing one Amazon. Furthermore, Sargent Steel is separating families, taking adopted children of Amazons away.

Sargent Steel Is Not a New Character--Not by a Long Shot Sargent Steel has a long and colorful publishing history. He was created by Pat Musilli for Charlton Comics, first appearing in 1964’s Sarge Steel #1. Charlton, seeing the explosion in popularity of superheroes thanks to Marvel, decided to create their own line, called “the Action Heroes.” While Sarge Steel was not technically part of the line, he met Judomaster, Peter Cannon Thunderbolt and other Charllton characters.

Sargent Steel Got a Boost at DC Comics Like most of Charlton’s characters, Sargent Steel found a home at DC in the 1980s, but unlike many of them, he did not get an equivalent in Alan Moore’s Watchmen. DC did work him into regular continuity, where he first appeared in 1987’s Legends #3. Sarge Steel, as he was called here, was a government agent specializing in metahumans. He eventually was appointed to the President’s Cabinet, as the Secretary of Metahuman Affairs.
