There are not enough organ donors or specialists to perform the transplants in the country

. Photo: Getty ImagesIt has been eight years since Zodwa* was diagnosed with kidney failure and, in the past four years, she has been waiting for an organ donor. Zodwa , who lives in Johannesburg, is one of 2 780 patients currently on the waiting list for organ transplants in South Africa – which include kidneys, livers, hearts and lungs.

Meanwhile, some of the provincial authorities City Press spoke to said they did not perform organ transplants and patients were transferred to either Cape Town or Johannesburg. “These hospitals currently have 260 active renal failure patients on dialysis. All 260 can potentially get a kidney but our kidney transplant programme is inactive due to lack of donors and specialists to do the transplants,” Mvambi said.

The department’s spokesperson, Foster Mohale, said the organ waiting lists were growing while more people, including young children, were dying almost every day while waiting for organs.A number of people lose their lives due to the unavailability of organs that could save them
