Stanford and Cal's move to the ACC could mean upheaval for San Diego State and the Mountain West as conference realignment continues to churn
The Atlantic Coast Conference flipped the final swing vote necessary to invite Stanford, Cal and SMU at discounted rates and expand to 18 members starting next year. That means Oregon State and Washington State are the lone standing structures in the ashes of a conference that traces its roots to 1915.It likely means the Beavers and Cougars will join the Aztecs and other Mountain West schools in some form, possibly as soon as next summer.
One is to simply join the Mountain West, which is more geographically favorable than the AAC but could mean abandoning tens of millions of dollars in Pac-12 assets that presumably would be divided 12 ways instead of two if they “stay.” “But that’s a decision that’s probably a couple weeks, maybe a couple months, down the road. And there are some schools that need some stability of scheduling before that.”
NCAA Tournament revenues are distributed to conferences over six years beginning the year after they’re earned. You get one unit for every game one of your teams play, and each unit is currently worth about $2 million over the six years. And what happens if one of the lawsuits currently filed against the NCAA and power conferences is settled for millions of dollars? Would a re-imagined Pac-12 have legal exposure?
That’s code for not hitching their wagon to the entire Mountain West. One reason is to increase the value of future media rights by jettisoning the bottom feeders in bad TV markets. Another, several sources said, is to make the new league more attractive in the next round of realignment for former Pac-12 members disenchanted with moves to the Central and Eastern time zones.
