Three former councillors of the High Land Water Metis Council have been charged by the OPP with defrauding the Metis Nation of Ontario.
In May, Robert Lloyd, 79, of Addington Highlands Township, Candance Lloyd, 54 of Napanee, and Scott Lloyd, 51 of Addington Highlands Township were all arrested and each charged with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.
The OPP said in a news release that they started their investigation in July 2022 when they were contacted about the misuse of funds by the council, previously located in Northbrook. They allege nearly $90,000 had been fraudulently used between March 2019 and June 2021. “We take our fiduciary responsibilities seriously, and we are cooperating fully and provided all information to the police to help them with their investigation,” Jo Anne Young, secretary-treasurer of the Métis Nation of Ontario, said in a statement. “As soon as we became aware of irregularities, we contacted the OPP. The limited resources and funds are meant to better the lives of Métis citizens and communities, they are not meant for personal gain.
