OPINIONISTA: Why my national vote will go to the ZACP By Ivo Vegter IvoVegter
The party seeks to build a society that works, in which low growth and high unemployment are the most important issues to resolve. Besides its foundational principles, it has also proposedfor practical problems, including fixing education, improving policing and replacing social welfare payments with a negative income tax.
A negative income tax sets a threshold income, above which you pay a flat rate of tax, and below which you earn the same rate as a subsidy. The exact threshold and tax rate would be set to ensure an unemployed person would receive enough to meet their most basic needs, and the government receives enough to fund its operations.
Simply taxing the rich to give to the poor does not in any way undermine the private ownership of the means of production. It might offend hardcore libertarians, but the ZACP claims to be capitalist, not libertarian. It is certainly not anti-capitalist to provide a social safety net. One of its members recently came under fire for appearing in a video chat with a number of far-right racists. While I’m happy to accept that mere discussion does not constitute an endorsement, and that it is better to engage extremists of all persuasions openly than to suppress them, I agree that it raises concerns. It certainly emphasises that the ZACP is not made up of experienced politicians, who would have been more alert to appearances.

OPINIONISTA: To the peace ambassador, Ismail Wais: Your role in South Sudan is biased and unethicalThe ongoing conflict in South Sudan is being made far worse by ethnic divisions, a scramble for the country’s oil, timber and other resources, and by bias against some of the parties by the designated peace ambassador Ambassador Wais, the Inter-governmental Authority on Development Special Peace Envoy to South Sudan, according to this open letter, which is a searing critique of his alleged role in exacerbating the conflict.

OPINIONISTA: Adam Habib’s book is ‘an exercise in triumphalism’ and ‘denigrates’ #FeesMustFall movementThere were many mistakes made by students during the Wits FeesMustFall protests, but Wits Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib’s account of the ‘days of rage’ falls short of the truth and is triumphalist in its telling. He portrays himself as the hero and just about everyone else as inept and incompetent villains.

OPINIONISTA: Tiger’s victory transcends golfIt was one of those moments when sport did what it does best. It transcended the sport itself. It soared in an intoxicating Shakespearean arc towards a universal sense of what it is to be human. And so it touched the hearts of all but the most miserly-spirited among us or those people inexplicably immune to sport’s transcendental allure.

OPINIONISTA: Pollyanna Peter’s Ramaphosa power-play schtick littered with flawsArguments such as that of Peter Bruce that Cyril Ramphosa is playing a long game and slowly marshalling his forces to purge the ANC of the worst excesses of the Zuma years ring hollow. Where was Ramaphosa when those excesses brought South Africa into a state of ruin, and the likes of Ace Magashule consolidated their power?

OPINIONISTA: SA cements its irrelevance on the global stage with Israel downgradeSouth Africa’s decision to downgrade its embassy in Tel Aviv is all about appeasing internal lobby groups and is to the detriment of its international standing. Without a clear foreign policy direction, trade objectives or national security strategy, the country has been reduced to a campaign office for every international social justice cause.

OPINIONISTA: Vigilantism is not the solution to rampant corruptionCorruption Watch, which has kept watch over corruption in South Africa since 2012, has reached and published a somewhat startling conclusion after surveying the terrible ravages of grand and petty corruption in the country, especially as these twin scourges impact on the lives of the poor. As the population is made up of a majority of poor people, the conclusion is also worrisome, even though it is true that the poor suffer most due to those ravages.
