Opinion: Why we're pushing for pickleball courts at San Diego's Robb Field now [Opinion]

, and it’s also growing rapidly in San Diego. CNBC has reported that over 36.5 million people played pickleball in the U.S from August 2021 to August 2022, after 5 million played in 2021. The equipment is inexpensive, and the game is easy to learn. Men and women, young and old play together. Older adults who no longer play more strenuous sports can keep moving and fit. Most importantly, the game provides a healthy social outlet to meet others, a boon for retirees and younger people.

Like tennis, pickleball facilities are best when there are many courts located at a central facility. Pickleball lessons, open play and tournaments are fun for players and grow interest in the sport. Players and spectators would travel from outside San Diego to participate in tournaments, bringing their tourism dollars with them.

The Pickleball Association of San Diego’s analysis of eight-plus months of the Peninsula Tennis Club’s schedule — from April 30 to Jan. 15 — revealed that most of the time all its activities could be accommodated on six courts. This information was provided to city parks officials and the mayor. But Peninsula Tennis Club has refused to provide its logs for public scrutiny. Bottom line: If it would share six public courts, pickleball players would have a great place to play now.

Recently, Peninsula Tennis Club resorted to citing the Point Loma High School tennis team’s residence at the club to block the temporary measure. But converting six courts would not require the team to move. Further, Point Loma High School’s teams should be welcomed across the street at Barnes Tennis Center, a public nonprofit whose mission is to promote youth tennis, and which hosts High Tech High’s team. “Barnes is too expensive,” say parents inposted by Peninsula Tennis Club.
