Opinion: Why must growth be the top economic goal? [Opinion]
” : It’s unanimous. Every participant in the Econometer favors destroying what is left of our backcountry. The coastal plain of San Diego has already been built out. There is no break. It’s solid homes with a few small areas saved for wildlife and freeways. San Diego has more to lose than anywhere else in the United States.
Why doesn’t the city begin discouraging people from moving here? Why doesn’t the government begin discouraging people from having more babies? Housing prices would come down, our natural environment would not be further plundered, traffic would improve, taxes would likely go down. This all seems like a positive move to benefit the future. For the last century, politicians and business leaders have promoted population growth to encourage economic growth. We are now paying the price.
