A lot of Nigerians, even normally homophobic ones, are questioning the way Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, ‘Bobrisky’ – a cross-dressing social media star – has been treated.

Bobrisky was sentenced to six months imprisonment last week for “naira abuse” … or “spraying”, a flamboyant cash-bestowing custom that originated in Bobrisky’s native Yoruba land then spread across Nigeria.

Spraying is frivolous and a soupçon vulgar, but it is never malevolent, so I’ve never understood why a Federal Government that has far more important things to worry about decided to ban this longstanding cultural practice. The reason given is that the fallen notes are trampled upon by revellers and therefore “disrespected”. It is for committing the crime of “tampering” with the currency in this manner that Bobrisky was arrested.

I never cease to marvel at the fact that even though quite a few high-ranking Nigerian men are known gays or bisexuals, most are married and all are firmly in the closet and don’t use their influence to protest about theBobrisky in full throttle mode looks like a glamorous chorus girl. He seems to have had breast implants and claimed to be transgender. Bobrisky has posted Instagram videos in which a man is seductively nuzzling him.
