Opinion: What would women do to keep women safe on the TTC? Our poll revealed that over-three quarters of riders reported already having taken personal safety measures. Solutions now lie with the authorities.
In recent months, Toronto’s public transit system has been rocked by a series of gender-based violence incidents. In December, a woman was murdered and another was severely injured during the same attack. On Jan. 17, a woman was sexually assaulted in a subway station bathroom. Another woman was violently attacked in a streetcar the following week.
Public transit is often gendered. Despite differences in when and how women and men travel, the needs of womenIn 2022, WomanACT and Angus Reid conducted a poll with 1,550 Torontonians on safety in transit. We found out that 90 per cent of the people had experienced harassment on the TTC and women were more likely to feel unsafe and experience harassment. With women more likely to use transit than men, it is certainly a gender issue.
On the bright side, the poll indicated that the majority of the riders felt that transit could be made safer with the right investments. Women rated good lighting in and around transit stops, security features such as cameras and emergency buttons, and request-stop programs as the most promising measures.
The poll showed that the top two reasons for women taking another mode of transportation than the TTC were not wanting to wait around and crowdedness. More than half of the respondents voiced the need for an increase in service frequency.another mode of transportation
