Now, as the education system continues its post-pandemic recovery, and final exams return, students are going to have to brace themselves for an inevitable correction in their grades. Opinion by Glenn Waugh

Final exams can be nerve-wracking at the best of times. And this year, as high school students return to class after the holiday break, these final course examinations loom large.

Amidst heightened concerns over learning gaps due to pandemic-related alternative schedules and remote instruction, there has been a drive to “catch up” — the Ministry of Education is giving school boards $175 million to expand tutoring supports as well as $365 million in catch-up payments to parents to pay to enhance learning.

This has led to consternation amongst many students now facing their first-ever examinations in courses that have become their university prerequisites, in the most consequential year of their high school experience. As such, the first semester that ended without disruption was just this past June, which also marked the first semester in many school boards to be conducted under normal class scheduling. It is these disruptions that have led many education stakeholders to voice concerns over the possibility of learning loss and knowledge gaps due to the constant pivoting to-and-from remote learning.

The desire to mitigate the emotional and psychological harm of the pandemic lockdowns meant gifting students with grossly inflated marks that could not go down regardless of the quality of the work being completed, if it was completed at all.
