History may record yesterday’s coronation of King Charles III as being more about apathy than the traditions of an ancient monarchy. Opinion by Jennifer Cole
History provides a lens through which to observe society’s evolution and place it in the context of the present. Seventy years ago, at the time of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, residential schools were still operating in Canada, and our official flag was Britain’s Union Jack. A lot has changed — so shouldn’t a coronation too?, this coronation reflected the Monarch’s role today and looked toward the future.
King Charles is of course renowned for his futuristic views. He, for example, spoke about climate change long before the rest of the world took notice. Aligning that progression with yesterday’s ancient rite, was though, for many a stretch.
Did you get out of bed, in the wee hours of Saturday morning to see what the Princess of Wales wore and take note of the battling princes? That, after all, is what will undoubtedly be talked about for weeks — not the significance and meaning behind a 1,000-year-old rite that has stood the test of time.
