Let us be clear: Children are safest when they are in the care of their families and loved ones. What remain clear and present dangers to the safety of unaccompanied children are prolonged stays in government custody and months to years of separation from their loved ones; separation that can cause irreparable harm to their emotional, physical and mental well-being.
Members of Congress and federal officials who are truly concerned about the safety of immigrant children should leave no stone unturned in ensuring children coming to the United States can do sotheir families, without facing unnecessary separation or prolonged custody in congregate facilities, and ensure that children and their families have access to robust services in their communities.
