Toronto sculpture show’s little figurines have a life-sized impact Opinion by HeatherMallick
a horror movie, a diorama of domestic servitude before the world ends, or a social justice sermon? Is it charming or appalling or tedious? Is it just like every single day since 2020?
In the pandemic, Giboulo’s tiny figures sleep, stock the fridge, cook food, order Amazon packages, stare at a laptop screen , eat banana slices on toast, play table hockey, visit a food bank made out of a cardboard box and take away cardboard boxes of food, or unhappily hang out.The little clay people, crafted in extreme detail, go on holiday, fish in an ocean littered with plastic junk, or sun themselves on a beach about to be sucked up by a clay vacuum cleaner or perhaps a tsunami.
In the bathroom there is a clay doll in the sink and clay soap and toothpaste in a cabinet. The menu harangues: “She floats in the sink, wanting to escape reality. All-around, life-sized sculpted objects stand for routine and the loss of meaning as we repeat the same gestures, day in and day out, while knowing that their impact is unsustainable.”
Children play table hockey. No, the menu says, it’s a stage set of children having nightmares of playing hockey with demons. The red-clotted COVID-19 virus is in goal. Presumably they will all die young.
